The Process

During my time at SCAD, I had the pleasure of working with a Animation Graduate Student creating her thesis on Human Motion Capture to Creature animation.

The purpose of the sound design was to make the creatures feel believable and life like, making us realize that human motion capture can be possible of mimicking animals.

To create authenticity, I took to the Foley Stage. For the Gorilla, I used my bare hands and feet through grass and straw. I recorded various degrees of intensity. With the help and direction of my recording engineer we composited 3 to four takes and I boosted the lower frequencies to make the gorilla steps feel heavier.

For the Horse, I went solo into the Foley Stage and took rocks that would fit in my palm to hit in the dirt. Editing these to the exact moment was the hardest challenge as every transient had a crucial moment in creating the feeling of a galloping horse. Every step the creature took was important.

For the Spider, I was stumped. What does a spider sound like when it walks? I ended up settling with a shell necklace and took to of the shells and clicked them together, slowly crumbled the necklace together, and more. With the help with a granular synthesizer, I was able to create a spider with all 8 moving legs.

Thank you to Stacey Suss and her Animation Team for this fun opportunity.
